How to make your pet comfortable with fireworks
It’s that time of year again, Bonfire night is upon us followed swiftly by New Years Eve and the dark nights are punctuated by the bangs and flashes of Fireworks.
Most pets cope with this fine but some find it a very stressful period and need a little help and understanding.
Our Firework Guide can help to get you through the season and major events like Bonfire Night and New Year’s Eve…
- Try walking your dog earlier, before it goes dark and fireworks are less likely to go off. If this isn’t possible, keep your dog on a lead to avoid them bolting if taken by surprise.
- It is very important to get your dog microchipped or if they are already, check that your information is up to date so your dog can be returned to you if they are scared by fireworks and run off. All dogs by law should have a name & contact tag. If your phone number is easily readable you will have a better chance of being reunited quickly.
- Playing the TV or radio might help to muffle the sound, make sure it’s not too loud and only do this if your dog is used to the noise already
- Closing the curtains to black out any flashing lights from outside can help
- Always make sure there is fresh, water as Dogs can drink more when they are worried.
- Speak to your vet or local pet store about calming products, these contain ‘dog appeasing pheromone’ and can help promote a feeling of calm for your dog.
- Panting and yawning are both signs that your dog is stressed. If your dog accepts strokes and cuddles this can be comforting to him, however some dogs want to be left alone.
- Providing a safe quiet place for them to settle in, can help de-stress. Once they have settled in their “safe place” it is best not to disturb them
With a little love and understanding the firework season can pass with not too much stress and still be enjoyed by all !
